SaaS platform for an IoT product

TLDR

The Aura Air Web Platform offers a user-friendly solution for managing indoor air quality, utilizing the Aura Air purification devices that are connected to the IoT. My challenge was to enhance user-engagement within the platform's dashboard. 

Through my role as a product designer and user researcher, I successfully achieved significant improvements in the KPIs. Specifically, I enhanced the user engagement rate by 30%, increased the action completion rate by 24.4%, and raised the user satisfaction rate by 14.9%.

THE STARTING POINT

About the Product

Aura Air Web Platform is a user-friendly product for managing indoor air quality, utilizing the Aura Air purification devices that are connected to the IoT. It empowers users to oversee their air purification devices, access real-time data, and receive air quality recommendations, among other features. With a focus on fostering a healthier indoor environment, the platform promotes proactive actions to enhance air quality.

The Challenge

The challenge of this project was to enhance user engagement and action-taking within the platform's dashboard. Initial data from Hotjar and Mixpanel indicated that users were not actively using the platform's features to improve air quality.

Further user research revealed that users struggled to understand the dashboard's rating parameters and the significance of various air quality parameters. The objective was to create a more engaging and user-friendly dashboard design that allowed users to control their rating and take necessary actions to improve air quality effectively.

  • Engagement Rate:  Improve the percentage of users to actively use the platform's features to control their rating and improve air quality.

  • Action Completion Rate: Improve the percentage of users to successfully perform maintenance tasks, set scheduled modes, and re-subscribe to emails when relevant.

  • User Satisfaction: Improve the percentage of users to state that they like the dashboard's clarity, ease of use, and overall experience.

In-depth Interviews

Interviews with current and potential users revealed that the majority were unaware of the meaning and impact of rating parameters on air quality. Users expressed a desire for a simpler and more actionable dashboard design. Also, they were frustrated as they were making actions to improve the air quality as shown in the platform, but couldn't understand why their score does not drastically increase.

Usability Testing

Usability testing sessions with the live platform uncovered usability issues and confusion related to navigation and understanding of dashboard elements. Participants struggled to locate and complete asked tasks.

By understanding user behavior and motivations, I optimized the flow to guide users towards essential features, such as adjusting maintenance tasks, setting modes, and managing notifications.

The user flow ensured a seamless experience, allowing users to take actions effortlessly and contribute to improving their air quality rating.

The concluding project unveils a revamped dashboard that not only displays air quality but also breaks down your aura rating, allowing users to gain a clear understanding of the components contributing to their rating and offers insights into potential areas for enhancement.

Upon entry, users can immediately spot their current rating, the highlighted issues they should focus on, and suggestions for boosting their score.

The AQI, Maintenance, Connectivity, Modes, and Engagement cards enable users to control their 100% of their rating by providing intuitive controls for setting schedules, managing device connections, and opting for e-mails.

To break it down:

  • Hierarchy: The cards that are triggered are given prominence, making them stand out. This approach allows for easy identification of current issues and prioritizing their resolution.

  • Clear Rating Parameter Cards: Each rating parameter card adopts a straightforward design with a concise explanation and details about the factors influencing it.

  • Points System: An added feature involves displaying the point deduction associated with each trigger, enlightening users on how their actions impact their standing. This not only helps users comprehend the effects of their choices but also offers insights into the potential improvements, ultimately motivating them to take meaningful steps.

  • Action-Oriented Interface: The interface is designed for action, presenting users with one-click solutions to address concerns or uphold device functionality. This approach encourages users to swiftly engage in necessary actions.

  • Gamification Elements: Witnessing immediate improvements in their air score following an action introduces an element of gamification. This creates a sense of accomplishment, igniting motivation for sustained and enthusiastic usage.

KPI Improvements

  • Engagement Rate: Improved by 30% (currently 65% of users actively use the platform's features to control their rating and improve air quality).

  • Action Completion Rate: Improved by 24.4% (currently 54% of users successfully perform maintenance tasks, set scheduled modes, and respond to notifications).

  • User Satisfaction: Improved by 14.9% (currently 80.5% of users expressed satisfaction to their CSM person with the dashboard's clarity, ease of use, and overall experience).
